As part of Mardi Gras 2026, we are proud to announce the return of Sydney Theatre Company’s Queer Backstage Tours, running alongside the landmark season of The Normal Heart at the Sydney Opera House.
Sydney Theatre Company has a rich history of LGBTQIA+ storytelling, both on stage and behind the scenes. These exclusive tours offer a rare opportunity to explore queer theatrical memories from groundbreaking productions of the 1980s through to today, at a time when one of the most significant works of queer theatre is being performed once again.
The Normal Heart holds a powerful place in Australian theatre history, first staged at STC in 1989 during the height of the AIDS crisis. Experiencing these tours during its return season provides deeper insight into the artists, stories and activism that helped shape queer culture and community.
Go behind the curtain and meet the teams who bring theatre to life. Discover iconic set designs, striking production images, fabulous costumes, and remarkable stories drawn from STC’s extensive archives.
The experience concludes with iconic harbour views at The Wharf Restaurant and Bar. Present your tour ticket to enjoy a complimentary Archie Rose canned cocktail.
